Event Report: Welcome to the Age of Agents – Unpacking A2A, MCP, and the Future of Customer Experience on Shopify

Growth Meetup Held on June 11

Growth Meetup is a monthly event where guests and participants come together to learn the know-how for continuously growing their businesses using Shopify.

On June 11, we welcomed Mr. Takanobu Kawano, Representative Director and CAIO of MMOL Holdings Co., Ltd., as our guest speaker to deliver a talk on the cutting edge of EC × AI Agents. For those who were unable to attend, here are the key highlights and the stunning vision of the future that was shared at the event.

Event Summary

The core of Mr. Kawano's presentation was the fact that AI is evolving from a mere "convenient tool" into an "autonomous AI agent" that thinks, plans, and collaborates with other AIs to achieve business goals. This revolution is underpinned by two new technical standards—MCP (Model Context Protocol) and A2A (Agent-to-Agent)—and holds the potential to fundamentally transform every aspect of EC, from customer experience to back-office operations.

In this article, drawing on the insights Mr. Kawano shared at the event, we explain the concrete business impact that AI agents will bring, the unavoidable security risks, and tips for navigating this era of major transformation.

Chapter 1: AI's New Role: From Tool to Autonomous Agent

A recurring theme in Mr. Kawano's presentation was the fact that AI is evolving from a "tool" that handles individual instructions into an "agent" that plans and executes on its own to achieve given objectives. Mr. Kawano pointed out that this means the merchant's role is shifting from being an "executor" of tasks to being a "manager" of an autonomously operating AI team.

Supporting the collaboration between these AI agents are two open standards that Mr. Kawano explained: MCP and A2A.

  • MCP (Model Context Protocol): A unified standard—like a "USB-C port"—that allows AI agents to securely connect to external tools and data sources. This enables AI to interface with specific databases and file systems without prior programming.
  • A2A (Agent-to-Agent): A universal language that allows AI agents with different specializations to "converse" and collaboratively solve complex tasks. The future Mr. Kawano described—where "agents converse with each other to get things done"—is realized through this protocol.

These are not competing standards; rather, A2A handles the "dialogue" between agents while MCP handles agent "execution," together enabling highly scalable systems. Mr. Kawano's remark—"It's not about APIs; it's about connecting, integrating, and authenticating"—can be understood as referring precisely to this secure and autonomous collaboration mechanism.

Chapter 2: How AI Agents Are Transforming the E-Commerce Landscape

Mr. Kawano stated that AI agent teams will bring revolution to both the front office and back office of EC.

  • Hyper-personalized customer experience: By analyzing customers' browsing history and real-time behavior, multiple specialized agents work in tandem—from checking inventory to suggesting promotions—to deliver a shopping experience optimized for each individual. For example, even complex return processes can be completed autonomously, with a support agent coordinating via A2A with logistics and order management agents, without burdening the customer.
  • Autonomous back-office operations: The entire content creation workflow—including product descriptions, promotional videos, and lifestyle image generation—can be automated. Additionally, inventory can be automatically optimized based on demand forecasting, improving the efficiency of the entire supply chain. Furthermore, as search evolves from a mere list of links into an "answer engine" that presents direct answers, Mr. Kawano explained that AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)—automatically generating content that is easy for AI to cite—will become a new key to customer acquisition.

Chapter 3: Safe Implementation and Future Outlook

At the same time, Mr. Kawano also sounded the alarm about the risks posed by autonomously acting agents. New security risks such as prompt injection and data leakage are involved, and as Mr. Kawano warned—"It's dangerous to hand over all permissions"—reckless implementation could lead to serious consequences.

The core of the countermeasures against these risks, as Mr. Kawano explained, lies in the ability to "configure permissions in granular detail"—in other words, practicing the "principle of least privilege." It is essential to adopt a Just-in-Time approach, granting agents only the minimum permissions required for a task, only when needed, along with sandboxing to execute in isolated environments.

The vision presented in the talk—"By 2027, a certain level of autonomous systems will be in place"—is also supported by predictions from external organizations. Gartner predicts that "by 2027, 50% of business decisions will be automated or augmented by AI agents," and further expects that "by 2028, 33% of enterprise software will incorporate agentic AI." This rapid evolution makes clear that standing on the sidelines is no longer an option.

Conclusion and Looking Ahead

The vision presented by Mr. Kawano powerfully suggested that the era of AI agents is not some distant future—it has already begun to move as a reality.

With standard protocols such as MCP and A2A taking shape, and AI evolving from individual tools into a collaborating team, the very way we do business is about to change at its core. As emphasized in the presentation, the key to success is not simply adopting new technology. What matters is having a deep understanding of your own business processes and a strategic design philosophy around which parts to delegate to AI agents and where humans should remain focused.

Welcoming AI agents as new "employees" and building the governance and management framework to maximize their capabilities—this will be an essential requirement for demonstrating leadership in the e-commerce market going forward.

We will continue to fully support all of you as you ride this wave of transformation and create the e-commerce of the future. Please look forward to our next event as well.
