Setting Goals for Your Instagram Operations
Without goals, you cannot determine your tactics or operations, so the first step for Instagram is to set your goals.
With Instagram, in addition to direct sales from Instagram, there is also the effect of customers who discover your brand on Instagram making purchases through branded search queries.
However, including such indirect effects in your goal-setting makes the goals themselves harder to define and measurement more difficult once operations begin. It is sufficient to start by setting goals around direct effects. For indirect effects, consider accounting for them by setting a higher target for search engine traffic goals.
Covering Everything from Awareness to Revenue
When managed properly, Instagram is an excellent social platform that can handle everything from building awareness to driving sales, all within a single platform.
You reach non-followers through ads and the Explore tab, boost engagement through Stories and LIVE, and drive sales through Stories and Shopping.

The key to running PDCA cycles and achieving results on Instagram is to identify which step in this model is your bottleneck and then apply your efforts accordingly. Set measurable KPIs that align with this model.
KPI Design
Based on the framework for growing with Instagram, design your KPIs. Below is an example of a KPI management report format where the reach metric is set to Instagram account reach, the engagement metrics are set to new followers and Instagram Shopping sessions, and the revenue metric is set to sales from Instagram.

When designing KPIs, use historical data as a reference and incorporate the relationships between metrics, as shown below.

For example, if there is a consistent trend where increases in new followers lead to increases in Instagram-driven sales, and the ratio is relatively stable with a clear causal relationship, incorporating that trend into your KPI design will make it more reflective of reality.
Operations Design
At the same time, think through the operations needed to achieve your KPIs. When planning your operations, you need to understand Instagram-specific trends and your own constraints. Here are some examples:
- Using Reels tends to extend reach.
- Reels alone make it difficult to grow engagement.
- Communicating through Stories tends to generate engagement.
- Stories alone make it difficult to grow reach.
- For products that are hard to photograph attractively, thorough text descriptions improve performance.
- The products that tend to be purchased differ between new customers and existing customers.
- The social media manager can dedicate an average of 3 hours per day to Instagram.
There will also be trends and constraints around posting frequency, posting times, DM communication, and more. Taking all of this into account, design an operations plan tailored to your business.
For Instagram, it helps to go in with the assumption that you will adjust operations based on whether reach, engagement, or sales is the issue at any given time — this makes it easier to respond flexibly. Having a backup plan ready in case performance falls short of expectations also allows for quick improvements based on on-the-ground judgment.
Since operations will be continuously adjusted based on results, keeping snapshots of your current operations setup (as shown above) will make retrospective reviews much easier.

When your posts or communications are data-driven — such as "suggest products popular with new customers this week" or "also feature products frequently purchased alongside best-sellers" — design systems to streamline and automate operations, such as making the necessary data instantly accessible to your team.
Shopify's rich API ecosystem makes it easy to leverage data in this way, which is one of Shopify's key strengths. Incorporate those strengths into your operations as well.
Integrating Shopify and Instagram
The integration between Shopify and Instagram can be set up using the Facebook & Instagram app. It allows you to configure catalog data for Instagram Shopping and set up the Pixel.
If you want to customize your Instagram Shopping feed to optimize the product images and other content displayed, you can do so with the Multifeeds for Google Shopping app.
Tracking
When you connect Instagram and Shopify through the standard Facebook & Instagram integration, traffic from Instagram Shopping will appear as "IGShopping" in Google Analytics referral sources, while other Instagram traffic will appear as "l.instagram.com" or "instagram.com". These are distinguishable without any additional setup, allowing you to understand traffic sources right away.
For Stories, make sure to set UTM Campaign parameters that reflect the content of each post. By configuring UTM Campaigns, you will be able to analyze in Google Analytics what the intent was behind each Stories post. This is an essential setup for running PDCA cycles and making the most of Instagram.
