Meet Our Team: Engineer Daiki Funayama | Building Great Products in a Team That Respects Each Other's Opinions
Funayama is a frontend engineer at StoreHero. We sat down with him to hear about his background before joining StoreHero and what life has been like since.
— First, can you tell us about your background?
During my student days, I interned at a startup and eventually went freelance, getting involved in development at various companies. After joining a company that ran a B2B SaaS business, I spent about two and a half years on product development before joining StoreHero.
— What made you decide to join StoreHero?
I had been involved in the business as a contractor before joining full-time. Over time, I started feeling that I wanted to get more seriously involved in building the development structure and the work itself, which led me to decide to come on as a full-time employee.
— Can you describe what you do day-to-day?
My main focus is frontend development for upcoming products. On top of that, I handle task allocation for contract members and coordinate with designers and the product manager on design-related matters.
— What is your current mission?
In the near term, it's to get the alpha version of the product released. I'm working through it together with the development team.
— What do you find rewarding or enjoyable about your work?
One of our contract frontend members is actually a friend of mine. She wasn't an engineer originally — she was about to enroll in a coding bootcamp when I invited her to come help out. Watching her grow since she started working with us has been really great. I myself didn't start from a bootcamp; I learned by jumping straight into real-world work. So I never really had a picture of what it looked like to study first and then work. Seeing my friend grow so rapidly while doing actual work is genuinely exciting.
— What do you love about StoreHero?
The whole company has a great atmosphere, and the development team on its own is no different — so there's no stress when it comes to communication. It's easy to speak your mind about the product, and people respect your opinions. Being able to work in that kind of environment is what I love most.
— What do you value or keep in mind when it comes to your work?
Work is something you do together with other people, so I try not to let my motivation levels dictate whether or not I show up and do my job.
— What kind of person would you like to work with?
I'd love someone on the frontend side who can review my code. In terms of personality, someone who can respect others' opinions, enjoy casual conversation, has their own character but is also flexible — that's the type I'd get along with well.
— What kind of person do you think is a good fit for StoreHero?
I think it's someone who genuinely resonates with StoreHero's vision.
— What are your ambitions going forward?
I want to see the new product through to a successful launch and build something that people actually use. Beyond that, I'd love to grow the frontend engineering team.
— Can you walk us through a typical day?
10:00 AM — Start of the workday, development meetings, etc.
12:00 PM — Lunch break
1:00 PM — Writing code, organizing tasks. Reaching out to team members in the virtual office to confirm specs, etc.
7:00 PM — End of the workday
It varies day by day, but that's the general shape of things.
— What do you enjoy doing in your personal time?
Traveling. I love ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) and hotels, so the destination is really just an excuse to stay somewhere great. I'm not that interested in sightseeing per se — it's more about finding a hotel or inn that promises a memorable experience and going there to enjoy it.
